Reading Time Calculator – Estimate How Long Text Takes to Read
Reading Time Calculator
Analyze text volume densities to generate exact estimated time spent duration specs

Quick answer
A reading time calculator divides the number of words in your text by a reading speed in words per minute (WPM). Most adults read about 200–250 WPM. So a 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes at 200 WPM, and 650 words takes 3 minutes 15 seconds. Formula: reading time = words ÷ WPM.
Our free reading time calculator counts your words and shows the estimated reading time instantly as you paste or type. Choose a pace from slow (150 WPM) to fast skimming (300 WPM) to match your audience. Bloggers use it for "5 min read" labels, speakers use it to time a talk, and students use it to plan study time.
How Reading Time Is Calculated
The reading time calculator first counts the words, then divides by the words per minute you selected. The remainder is turned into seconds. For 650 words at 200 WPM: 650 ÷ 200 = 3.25 minutes, which is 3 minutes and 15 seconds (195 seconds).
| Pace profile | Words per minute | Typical reader |
|---|---|---|
| Slow | 150 | Technical or study reading, second-language readers |
| Average (standard) | 200 | General adult reading on screen |
| Pro content marketer | 250 | Experienced readers of blog content |
| Fast skimming | 300 | Scanning for key points |

Using the Reading Time Calculator for Speeches
People read silently much faster than they speak. Most speakers talk at around 130–150 words per minute, so for a speech or video script, use the Slow (150 WPM) setting as a rough speaking estimate. A 750-word speech then takes about 5 minutes to deliver.
Why Show Reading Time on a Blog?
- Sets expectations. A reading time calculator gives you an honest label. Readers are more likely to start an article when they know it is a "4 min read".
- Helps planning. Editors can match post length to the audience and topic.
- Improves engagement. Clear time labels can reduce early exits on long guides.
- Fits newsletters. Many email writers keep issues under a target reading time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using one speed for every audience. Technical guides read slower than lifestyle posts; pick the right pace in the reading time calculator.
- Counting code and tables. Code blocks and data tables take longer to read than prose.
- Forgetting images and video. Add time for any embedded media.
- Treating it as exact. Reading time is an estimate; people read at very different speeds.
