This calculator uses standard international conversion constants. Fractional values are automatically optimized for maximum precision.

Use this free torque unit converter to convert Nm to lb-ft, lb-in and kg-m instantly – type in any field.

Quick answer

To convert Nm to lb-ft, multiply by 0.73756. To convert lb-ft to Nm, multiply by 1.35582. Example: 250 Nm × 0.73756 ≈ 184.39 lb-ft. This torque unit converter converts newton-metres, pound-feet, pound-inches and kilogram-metres at the same time – just type in any field.

Torque specs come in different units depending on where a car, bike or tool was made. European and Asian service manuals usually use newton-metres (Nm), American manuals use pound-feet (lb-ft) or pound-inches (lb-in), and older specs sometimes use kilogram-metres (kg-m). Getting the conversion wrong can mean a stripped thread or a loose wheel.

Our free torque unit converter removes the guesswork. Type a number into any of the four fields and the other three update in real time. A built-in reference matrix shows the base conversion factors, and everything runs privately in your browser.

Torque Conversion Formulas

Nm → lb-ft0.737562100 Nm = 73.76 lb-ft
lb-ft → Nm1.355818100 lb-ft = 135.58 Nm
Nm → lb-in8.85074610 Nm = 88.51 lb-in
lb-in → Nm0.112985100 lb-in = 11.30 Nm

kg-m → Nm9.8066510 kg-m = 98.07 Nm
Nm → kg-m0.101972100 Nm = 10.20 kg-m

These factors come from the definitions of the units: one pound-force is 4.448222 newtons and one foot is 0.3048 metres, so 1 lb-ft = 4.448222 × 0.3048 ≈ 1.355818 Nm. One kilogram-force is exactly 9.80665 N, so 1 kg-m = 9.80665 Nm.

Nm to lb-ft worked example

An engine is rated at 400 Nm of torque. 400 × 0.737562 ≈ 295 lb-ft.

lb-ft to Nm worked example

A wheel nut spec says 100 lb-ft. 100 × 1.355818 ≈ 135.6 Nm – set your torque wrench to 135 or 136 Nm depending on its scale.

How to Use the Torque Unit Converter

Converting torque units takes only a few seconds.

Step 1: Type a Value in Any Unit Field

Click the field for the unit you already have – Newton-meters, Pound-feet, Pound-inches or Kilogram-meters – and type your number. For example, enter 250 in Newton-meters.

Step 1 enter a torque value in Nm to convert to lb-ft

Step 2: Read All Converted Values Instantly

The other three fields update in real time. 250 Nm shows as 184.39 lb-ft, 2,212.69 lb-in and 25.49 kg-m. It works in any direction: type 100 in Pound-feet and you get 135.58 Nm.

Step 2 convert lb-ft to Nm, lb-in and kg-m instantly

Step 3: Check the Reference Matrix or Clear

Use the Base Conversion Reference Matrix below the fields for quick 1-unit factors, and click Clear Fields to start a new conversion.

Where You Need a Torque Unit Converter

  • Car maintenance: wheel nuts, spark plugs, drain plugs and cylinder-head bolts all have torque specs. Always follow the value in your vehicle manual.
  • Bicycles: carbon handlebars and seat posts are often rated at only 4–6 Nm (about 35–53 lb-in), so pound-inches matter.
  • Comparing engines: spec sheets list torque in Nm or lb-ft depending on the market.
  • Power tools: impact drivers and wrenches quote maximum torque in Nm or in-lbs.
  • Engineering and education: converting between SI and imperial units in coursework.

Tips for Accurate Torque Settings

  • Round to the scale of your torque wrench, never above the maximum spec.
  • lb-ft and ft-lb are used interchangeably for torque; in-lb and lb-in also mean the same.
  • Use pound-inches for small fasteners – a click wrench in lb-ft is often inaccurate below about 20% of its range.
  • Torque (Nm) and energy (joules) share base units, but they are different quantities – do not mix them up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Nm to lb-ft?

Multiply newton-metres by 0.737562. For example, 100 Nm × 0.737562 = 73.76 lb-ft.

How do I convert lb-ft to Nm?

Multiply pound-feet by 1.355818. For example, 80 lb-ft × 1.355818 = 108.47 Nm.

Is ft-lb the same as lb-ft?

For torque, yes. Both describe one pound-force acting at one foot. lb-ft is the preferred engineering form.

How many lb-in are in 1 lb-ft?

There are 12 pound-inches in one pound-foot because there are 12 inches in a foot.

What is kg-m torque in Nm?

1 kilogram-metre (kgf·m) equals 9.80665 Nm. Multiply kg-m by 9.80665 to get Nm.

Is this torque unit converter free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and converts all four units instantly in your browser.
