Use this free disavow file generator to turn a messy list of spammy backlinks into a correctly formatted file for Google’s Disavow Links tool.

Quick answer

A disavow file is a plain UTF-8 .txt file with one rule per line: domain:example.com to ignore every link from a site, a full URL to ignore one page, and lines starting with # for comments. Paste your toxic links, keep Convert all to Domain-Level ticked, and the generator strips http, https, www and paths, removes duplicates and blank lines, and outputs rules such as domain:spammy-links-farm.net. Copy or download the .txt file and upload it in Google Search Console’s Disavow Links tool.

If your site has a manual action for unnatural links, or you know a large set of paid or spammy links points to it, Google lets you ask it to ignore those links with a disavow file. The file must follow a strict format, and one wrong line can stop the upload.

Backlink exports from Ahrefs, Semrush or Search Console list full URLs, repeated domains and inconsistent prefixes. This disavow file generator cleans all of that into valid rules in seconds.

Example: Before and After

Input:

https://www.spammy-links-farm.net/page-1.html
http://spammy-links-farm.net/page-2

  bad-directory.info
https://blog.casino-spam.biz/post/123
https://cheap-seo-links.top/free-backlinks
# contacted owners, no reply

Output with domain-level conversion:

domain:spammy-links-farm.net
domain:bad-directory.info
domain:blog.casino-spam.biz
domain:cheap-seo-links.top
# contacted owners, no reply

The two spammy-links-farm.net pages became one rule, the www and paths were removed, the blank line was dropped, and the comment was kept.

Google Disavow File Format Rules

Line typeFormatUse
Domaindomain:example.comIgnore all links from the site (recommended)
URLhttps://example.com/page.htmlIgnore links from one page only
Comment# note textNotes for yourself; Google ignores them
  • Save as a .txt file encoded in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII.
  • One rule per line; no extra text after a rule.
  • The file can be up to 2 MB and 100,000 lines.
  • A new upload replaces the previous file, so always upload the complete list.

How to Use the Disavow File Generator

Step 1: Choose the Parsing Options

Keep Convert all to Domain-Level (Recommended) ticked to turn every URL into a domain: rule. Untick it to keep full URLs for page-level disavows. Auto-Clean Spaces & Empty Lines removes extra spaces and blank rows.

Step 1 choose domain-level conversion and auto-clean options in the disavow file generator

Paste URLs or plain domains into Input Toxic Links, one per line. Add notes on their own lines starting with #. The Google .txt Output updates instantly and the badges show how many lines and rules there are.

Step 2 paste toxic URLs and domains to generate Google disavow rules

Step 3: Copy or Download the File

A green message confirms how many rules were created. Click Copy Rules or Download .txt File, then upload the file in the Disavow Links tool for your Search Console property. Click Clear List to start again.

Step 3 copy the disavow rules or download the disavow .txt file

Google says most sites never need to disavow, because its systems already ignore most spammy links. Consider a disavow file when:

  • You have a manual action for unnatural links in Search Console.
  • You or a previous agency bought links or used a link network and cannot get them removed.
  • You see a large, deliberate attack of spam links and are worried it could lead to a manual action.

Do not disavow links just because a third-party tool gives them a low score. Disavowing good links can remove value your site was getting.

How to Upload a Disavow File

  1. Open Google’s Disavow Links tool while signed in to Search Console.
  2. Choose the property (domain or URL-prefix) the links point to.
  3. Click Upload disavow list and choose your .txt file.
  4. Fix any errors Google reports and upload again.
  5. Allow several weeks for Google to recrawl the links and apply the file.

Tips

  • Paste plain URLs or domains; you do not need to add the domain: prefix yourself.
  • Keep a dated copy of every file you upload.
  • Domain-level rules also cover subdomains, so use a subdomain rule only if you want to keep the main domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a disavow file?

It is a .txt file that lists links or domains you want Google to ignore when assessing your site, uploaded through the Disavow Links tool.

Should I disavow by domain or by URL?

Domain level is usually best, because spammy sites often link from many pages. Use URL level only when the rest of the site is fine.

Does the generator remove duplicates?

Yes. With domain-level conversion on, repeated domains and www versions become a single domain: rule.

Can I add notes to a disavow file?

Yes. Start a line with # to add a comment. Google ignores those lines.

How long does a disavow take to work?

Google applies it as it recrawls the linking pages, which can take several weeks or longer.

Is the disavow file generator free?

Yes. It is free, runs in your browser and your link list is not uploaded.
