Quick answer

An FD calculator finds your fixed deposit maturity value with A = P × (1 + r/n)n × t, where P is the deposit, r the annual rate, n the compounding periods per year and t the years. For example, 100,000 deposited at 7% for 5 years with quarterly compounding matures at 141,477.82, earning 41,477.82 in interest.

Our free FD calculator shows exactly how much your fixed deposit will be worth at maturity. Choose your currency from more than 20 countries, enter the deposit amount, interest rate, time period and compounding frequency, and the FD calculator gives you the maturity amount, your principal and the total interest earned.

Use it to compare bank and term deposit offers, plan short-term savings goals or decide between a fixed deposit and other investments. It runs privately in your browser.

What Is a Fixed Deposit?

A fixed deposit (FD), also called a term deposit or certificate of deposit, is a savings product where you lock in a lump sum with a bank for a fixed period at a fixed interest rate. Your rate does not change during the term, so you know in advance exactly what you will receive at maturity. Read more about time deposits and how they work.

Maturity amount A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t

Interest earned = A − P

P = deposit, r = annual rate as a decimal, n = compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly), t = years

How to Use the FD Calculator

Follow these five quick steps:

Step 1: Select Your Country or Currency

Pick your currency, for example India (INR - ₹), Pakistan (PKR) or United States (USD), so results show the right symbol.

FD Calculation Example

  1. Inputs: 100,000 at 7% a year for 5 years, compounded quarterly.
  2. Rate per quarter: 7% ÷ 4 = 1.75% = 0.0175.
  3. Number of quarters: 4 × 5 = 20.
  4. Maturity: 100,000 × (1.0175)20 = 141,477.82.
  5. Interest earned: 141,477.82 − 100,000 = 41,477.82.

FD vs Other Savings Options

  • FD vs savings account: FDs usually pay a higher rate in exchange for locking your money in.
  • FD vs SIP: an FD gives a fixed, predictable return, while a SIP in equity funds can grow more over the long term but with market risk. Compare with our SIP Calculator.
  • FD vs simple interest: most FDs compound interest, so you earn more than simple interest over several years. See our Simple Interest Calculator.

Things to Know Before Opening an FD

  • Premature withdrawal: breaking an FD early often means a penalty or a lower rate.
  • Tax on interest: FD interest is usually taxable, and some countries deduct tax at source.
  • Senior citizen rates: many banks offer older customers a slightly higher rate.
  • Deposit protection: check whether your country insures bank deposits and up to what limit.
  • Laddering: splitting money across FDs with different maturities keeps some cash available.

Who Should Use an FD Calculator?

Savers use an FD calculator to compare rates from different banks before locking in money. Retirees use an FD calculator to plan a steady income, and anyone building an emergency fund can use the FD calculator to see how much a short-term deposit will earn.
