Overtime Calculator – Time and a Half and Double Time Pay
Overtime Calculator

Quick answer
Overtime pay is your hourly rate times the overtime multiplier times the overtime hours. At 20 an hour, time and a half is 30 an hour, so 8 hours of overtime pays 240. Add the 800 for 40 regular hours and the week totals 1,040. This calculator does the split for you, including double time hours.
Our free overtime calculator works for hourly workers, payroll staff and freelancers. Enter your total hours and the point where overtime starts, or type the regular and overtime hours yourself, and see every part of your pay.
How Overtime Pay Is Calculated
Overtime rate = hourly rate x multiplier. Overtime pay = overtime rate x overtime hours. Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay + any double time pay. The most common multiplier is 1.5, known as time and a half. Double time (2x) is often used for public holidays, Sundays or very long days.
| Hourly rate | Hours | Overtime | Overtime pay | Total pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 48 (limit 40) | 8 h at 1.5x = 30/h | 240 | 1,040 |
| 20 | 48 (limit 40) | 8 h at 2x = 40/h | 320 | 1,120 |
| 20 | 40 + 6 OT + 2 DT | 6 h at 30, 2 h at 40 | 180 + 80 | 1,060 |
| 15 | 45 (limit 40) | 5 h at 22.50/h | 112.50 | 712.50 |
How to Use the Overtime Calculator
Step 1: Enter Your Hourly Rate and Multiplier
Open the overtime calculator, type your hourly rate, choose your currency and pick the overtime multiplier. 1.5x is time and a half. Choose Custom for any other rate, such as 1.75x.

Step 2: Add Total Hours and the Overtime Limit
On From total hours, enter the hours you worked, for example 48, and the number of hours after which overtime starts, usually 40 a week or 8 a day. If some hours are paid at double time, enter them in the optional box.

Step 3: Read Your Overtime and Total Pay
The result shows total gross pay, here 1,040 dollars. The cards break it down into the overtime rate (30), regular pay (800), overtime pay (240), double time pay and the effective hourly rate across all hours. Click Copy breakdown to copy it.

Step 4: Or Enter Overtime Hours Directly
If your payslip already splits the hours, switch to Enter overtime hours and type regular, overtime and double time hours. 40 regular, 6 overtime and 2 double time hours at 20 an hour gives 1,060.

Overtime Rules Vary
Who gets overtime, and when, depends on the law where you work and on your contract. In the United States, the federal Fair Labor Standards Act requires at least 1.5 times the regular rate for non-exempt employees after 40 hours in a work week, and some states, such as California, also have daily overtime. Many other countries set overtime by daily or weekly limits, or leave it to employment contracts. Check your contract or local labour office for the rule that applies to you.
Overtime Tips
- Use your gross hourly rate before tax. The result is also before tax and deductions.
- Paid leave and holidays usually do not count towards the weekly overtime limit unless your contract says so.
- If you are salaried, divide your weekly salary by your contracted hours to get an hourly rate first.
- Keep a record of your hours with the work hours calculator, then bring the total here.
