Player X's Turn

Play tic tac toe online for free, right in your browser. Take on the computer or pass the device to a friend for a two-player game. Get three of your marks in a row, across, down or diagonally, before your opponent does. The scoreboard keeps track of wins and ties between rounds.

Quick answer

To win at tic tac toe, place three X or O marks in a straight line on the 3 × 3 grid. Start in a corner or the centre, always block your opponent’s two-in-a-row, and try to create a “fork”, a move that makes two winning threats at once. If both players play perfectly, every game ends in a tie.

Tic tac toe, also called noughts and crosses or Xs and Os, is one of the first strategy games most people learn. A round takes under a minute, which makes it perfect for a quick break, a classroom warm-up or teaching kids to think a move ahead.

This tic tac toe online game needs no download or sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers.

Tic Tac Toe Rules

  1. The game is played on a 3 × 3 grid of nine squares.
  2. Player X always goes first, then players take turns.
  3. On your turn, place your mark in any empty square.
  4. The first player to get three marks in a row, column or diagonal wins.
  5. If all nine squares fill up with no line of three, the game is a tie.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe Online

Step 1: Choose a Mode and Make Your First Move

Pick Play vs CPU to play against the computer, or 2 Players to play with someone next to you. You are X and move first. Tap a square; here X takes the top-left corner and the CPU answers in the centre.

Step 1 tic tac toe online with X in the corner and O in the centre

Step 2: Block and Build Threats

Watch the turn indicator above the board. X takes the opposite corner. The CPU replies with a corner, which creates a diagonal threat that X must block. Always check for your opponent’s two-in-a-row before making your own plan.

Step 3: Win the Round and Track the Score

Blocking in the bottom-left corner gives X two ways to win at once, a fork. The CPU can only stop one, so X completes the left column and wins. The winning squares light up, the scoreboard adds a point, and Play Again or Restart Game starts a new round. Reset Scoreboard clears the totals.

Step 3 Player X wins with three in the left column

Winning Strategy

  • Start in a corner. It gives the most chances to set up a fork later.
  • If your opponent starts in a corner, take the centre. It is the safest reply.
  • Block first. If your opponent has two in a line, block it before anything else.
  • Look for forks. A move that creates two threats at once usually wins.
  • Opposite corners trick: as X, take a corner, then the opposite corner. If the CPU answers with another corner, you can often set up a fork.

How the CPU Plays

The computer follows simple rules: it takes a winning move if it has one, blocks your winning move, grabs the centre, then picks a corner or any free square. That makes it a fair opponent for kids and casual players, while experienced players can beat it with a fork. In two-player mode, the CPU is switched off and both moves come from the people at the screen.

Why Perfect Play Always Ties

Tic tac toe is a solved game. There are only 255,168 possible games, and computer analysis shows that if neither player makes a mistake, the result is always a draw. That is why the fun lies in spotting an opponent’s slip.
