How Days Between Two Dates Are Counted

By default the count is the difference between the two dates. From Monday to Wednesday is 2 days, because you move forward two times. This is how most date calculators, Excel and programming languages work. Some situations count both ends instead. A course that runs from Monday to Wednesday lasts 3 days, so tick Include the end date for those.

2024 was a leap year, so 29 February 2024 to 28 February 2025 is 365 days even though the dates look one day short of a year. The calculator uses the real calendar, so leap days are always included where they fall.

How to Use the Days Between Two Dates Calculator

Step 1: Pick the Start and End Date

Step 2: Choose Whether to Count the End Date

Tick Include the end date if both the first and last day should be counted, for example for leave, events or a course. The same dates now give 206 days.

Weekdays and Weekend Days

The weekday figure counts every Monday to Friday in the range and the weekend figure counts Saturdays and Sundays. Together they always add up to the total days. Public holidays are not removed, so for working days that skip holidays use the business days calculator.

Tips for Accurate Results

• Decide first whether the end day counts. Most mistakes come from counting one day too many or too few.
• The order of the dates does not matter. If the end is earlier than the start, the tool counts in reverse and tells you.
• Months are not all the same length, so 6 months is not always 182 days. Use the years, months and days figure when you need calendar months.
