Quick answer

To convert ASCII to text, look up each decimal code in the ASCII table and replace it with its character. For example, 72 101 108 108 111 decodes to Hello, because 72 = H, 101 = e, 108 = l and 111 = o. Capital letters run from 65 (A) to 90 (Z) and lowercase from 97 (a) to 122 (z).

Our free ASCII to text converter decodes a whole list of codes at once. Choose whether your codes are separated by spaces, commas, or written as fixed 3-digit blocks, and it returns the plain text plus a character map with each code's hex and binary value. Switch to Text to ASCII to encode instead.

What Is ASCII?

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) gives every basic character a number. Codes 0–31 are control characters, 32 is a space, 48–57 are the digits 0–9, 65–90 are A–Z and 97–122 are a–z. Standard ASCII ends at 127; the tool accepts values up to 255 to cover the common extended range. Every modern text encoding, including UTF-8, keeps the same values for these first 128 characters, which is why ASCII to text decoding still matters today.

How to Use the ASCII to Text Converter

Step 1: Paste the ASCII Codes

With ASCII to Text selected, paste your decimal codes into the input box. We enter 72 101 108 108 111.

Step 2: Choose the Delimiter

Pick how your codes are separated: Space, Comma, or Continuous Block (3-digit fixed) for strings like 072101108. Our example uses spaces.

Step 3: Click Convert Payload

Press Convert Payload. Codes above 255 trigger an error message so you can fix the input.

Step 4: Read the Text and Character Map

The ASCII to text result shows Hello with a Copy Result button. The Character Matrix Map lists every character with its decimal index, hex code (like 0x48) and 8-bit binary stream.

A handy trick: a lowercase letter is always its capital plus 32. A is 65 and a is 97.

Where You Will Meet ASCII Codes

  • Programming: character codes in C, Python (ord and chr) and JavaScript (charCodeAt).
  • Puzzles and CTFs: hidden messages written as number strings.
  • Data debugging: spotting invisible characters like tabs (9) or carriage returns (13).
  • Teaching: showing students how computers store text as numbers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing hex and decimal. This ASCII to text tool expects decimal codes. 48 decimal is "0", but 0x48 is "H".
  • Wrong delimiter setting. Comma-separated codes need the Comma option.
  • Dropping leading zeros in fixed blocks. In 3-digit mode, 72 must be written 072.
  • Expecting emoji. Emoji and most non-English letters are outside ASCII and use Unicode instead.

What is ASCII 32?

ASCII 32 is the space character.

Can I paste comma-separated codes?

Yes. Choose the Comma option in the delimiter menu, then convert.

What range of codes does the tool accept?

It accepts decimal values from 0 to 255 and shows an error for anything higher.

Is this ASCII to text converter free?
