Quick answer

To use this credit card payoff calculator, choose Calculate Payoff Time and enter your balance, APR and monthly payment, then press Calculate Payoff. You will see how long it takes to be debt-free, the total interest and the total paid. For example, $5,000 at 20% APR with $200 a month takes 2 years and 9 months and costs $1,521.71 in interest. Switch to Calculate Target Payment to find the monthly payment needed to clear the balance in a set number of months.

Credit card interest is one of the most expensive kinds of debt, and making only small payments can keep you paying for years. This free credit card payoff calculator shows exactly how long your current payment will take and how much interest it will cost, so you can decide whether to pay more.

It also works backwards: tell it how many months you want to be debt-free in and it calculates the monthly payment you need. If your payment is too small to cover the monthly interest, it warns you that the balance would never be paid off.

How Credit Card Interest Works

Your APR is divided by 12 to get a monthly rate. Each month interest is added to the remaining balance, then your payment is subtracted. If your payment is close to the interest charge, very little goes toward the balance, which is why minimum payments can take decades. Paying even a little more each month cuts the payoff time dramatically.

Credit Card Payoff Calculator Tips

  • Pay more than the minimum: an extra $50 a month can save hundreds in interest.
  • Stop adding new purchases to the card while you pay it down.
  • Pay the highest-APR card first (avalanche) to save the most interest, or the smallest balance first (snowball) for quick wins.
  • Consider a 0% balance transfer card if you can clear the debt within the promotional period.
  • Set up automatic payments so you never miss a due date or pay late fees.

Assumptions

The calculator assumes a fixed APR, a fixed monthly payment, no new purchases and no fees. Real statements can differ slightly because card issuers may calculate interest on daily balances. Use it to plan, then check exact figures with your card provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this credit card payoff calculator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limits.

How long will it take to pay off my credit card?

Enter your balance, APR and monthly payment in Calculate Payoff Time and the calculator shows the exact number of years and months.

What happens if I only pay the minimum?

Minimum payments are often barely above the interest charge, so payoff can take many years and cost far more than the original balance.

How do I pay off a card in 12 months?

Use Calculate Target Payment, enter 12 months and the tool shows the monthly payment needed.

Why does it say my payment is too low?

Your payment is less than or equal to the monthly interest, so the balance would never go down.
